Public bathhouses existed in antiquity with the most diverse functions. Religious, spiritual, or even sport related they were understood as a way of purifying bodies and souls. Currently, public baths have one main purpose: Hygiene. Bathing is a basic human need of major importance for the well-being of people, in the relationship with themselves and with others. In the Portuguese capital there are 18 public bathhouses, not all of them working. Some exceed 1500 hot baths monthly. Mostly men, homeless, unemployed or with poor social conditions. They come and go, one, two, three times a week. Some people come and go without saying a word, others speak anonymously while others come to socialize, talk and take a shower.
